Record-Setting Westendorf BAA Athlete of the Week for Oct. 12-18

NEWBERG, Ore. - A record-setting performance in leading the George Fox Bruins to the Northwest Conference Women's Golf Fall Classic championship has earned Jill Westendorf the Bruin Athletic Association Women's Athlete of the Week award for Oct. 5-11.
After shooting an 88 in the first round Saturday on the Green Back course at the Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland, Ore., Westendorf knocked 16 strokes off her score Sunday for an even-par 72. The freshman from Redmond, Ore., spent most of the day under par, not shooting her first bogey until the 15th hole, but followed that up with a birdie on the par-3 16th to go back to two-under. Although she took bogeys on the last two holes to finish at even par, she carded the best 18-hole round in the four-year history of the George Fox program by three stokes. Her total score of 160 enabled her to finish second in the individual standings, three strokes behind medalist Emily Guthrie of Whitworth.
With Westendorf leading the way, the Bruins rallied from second, eight strokes behind Whitworth, after the first day to win the tournament going away. George Fox had a final score of 342-309=651, 12 strokes ahead of Whitworth's 334-329=663. The Bruins' second-day score and final score are new GFU records, and are believed to be conference records as well. It was the Bruins' first title in a conference event and puts them in first place in the NWC standings heading into the spring season.
The Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the Bruin sports seasons by the Bruin Athletic Association, whose mission is to provide George Fox student-athletes with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the Bruin athletics program.
