CULTURAME CLASSIC: Hawaii-Hilo Takes Early Lead but First Round Incomplete

NORTH PLAINS, Ore. - With six players unable to finish the course due to darkness, scores are incomplete for the first round of the Culturame Women's Golf Classic which started Friday afternoon here at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course, but the University of Hawai'i-Hilo has the early lead in the tournament.

A "morning frost warning" pushed the start time for all golfers back over half an hour, so the Culturame participants did not get started until nearly 1:00 p.m.  Four teams have incomplete scores due to the six players who were unable to finish.  Once they have done completed the 18th hole, the second and final round will begin, with the first group expected to tee off at 12:06 p.m.

For the three teams who did have all their players finish, the UHH Vulcans shot a four-player team score of 315 on the par-72, 5,808-yard Ghost Creek course, followed by the host George Fox University Bruins at 330, and the St. Martin's University Saints at 331.  Other teams competing are the Pacific University Boxers, the Northwest Christian University Beacons, the Simpson University Red Hawks, and the Biola University Eagles.

The early individual leader is Dayna Bersamin of Hawai'i-Hilo with a one-over-par 40-33=73.  In second place is Ashley King of Northwest Christian at 41-35=76, with Valerie Kitamori of Pacific standing third at 43-34=77.

For the Bruins, Brianna Nap has a 45-35=80 and Jill Westendorf a 42-38=80.  One shot behind is Kelsey Morrison at 44-37=81, with Abby Mann next at 42-41=83.  Completing the George Fox contingent are Mandy Cameron with a 46-43=89, and Sarah Askin with a 45-46=91.
