McGrew Gives Bruins Back-to-Back Golfers for BAA, NWC Top Athlete Awards

NEWBERG, Ore. – By capturing medalist honors at the Pacific Fall Invitational women’s golf tournament on Sept. 24-25, George Fox’s Megan McGrew has received both the Bruin Athletic Association Women’s Athlete of the Week award and the Northwest Conference Women’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Week award for Sept. 19-25.

McGrew, a freshman from Yolo, Calif., shot a 74 on Saturday and stood one stroke behind Emily Guthrie of Whitworth.  Playing under windy and occasionally-drizzly conditions on Sunday, she shot a 77 to finish with a seven-over-par 151 total, good enough to win the tournament as Guthrie slipped back into the pack.  The only better round on Sunday was a 75 by Bruin teammate Kelsey Morrison, who was last week’s BAA and NWC awards winner.

Led by McGrew, George Fox stretched a first-day lead of only two strokes to a final margin of 26, winning the event 629-655 over runner-up Whitworth.  It was the first tournament win (out of two tournaments played) of the 2011-12 season for the Bruins, who were ranked 11th nationally in the Golf World / National Golf Coaches Association pre-season poll.

The George Fox Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the Bruin sports seasons by the Bruin Athletic Association, whose mission is to provide George Fox student-athletes with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the Bruin athletics program.  For more information about the organization or to become a member, visit the Bruin Athletic Association website
