BOXER CLASSIC: Bruins Win Big in Pacific Tourney with Four Players in Top Six Spots
BANKS, Ore. – Kelsey Morrison and Whitney Jammerman finished 1-2 respectively on the leader board while Loreece Magsanide had Sunday's best individual round as the 7th-ranked George Fox University Bruins captured the Boxer Women's Golf Classic, which concluded Sunday afternoon here at the Quail Valley Golf Course, by 34 strokes.
George Fox added a second-day score of 308 to its first-day score of 307, finishing 39 shots over par with a four-player score of 615 on the par-72, 5,890-yard course. Whitman College, which is ranked 14th, was the runner-up with a 323-326=649 score. Willamette University took third with a 336-332=668, and host Pacific University was fourth with a 380-423=803.
Morrison shot a two-day score of 70-75=145, one-over-par, for her second tournament win in as many tries this fall. She won the prestigious O'Brien National Invitational Tournament on Sept. 16-17 against golfers from 10 teams ranked in the Golf World / NGCA / NCAA Division III top 15 pre-season national poll. Jammerman posted a consistent 77-78=155 to take second, one shot ahead of Whitman's Tate Head, who shot a 76-80=156.
Abby Mann of George Fox (77-81=158) tied Elise Levy of Willamette (82-76=158) for fourth, while Magsanide shot a two-over-par 74 for Sunday's best round and finished sixth with an 85-74=159. Kiana Lumanlan shot an 83-81=164 to place ninth.
Rounding out the lineup for the Bruins, Melissa Nugent shot an 80 on Sunday after being unavailable to play on Saturday. Hailey Ostrom, who shot a 95 on Saturday, played nine holes on Sunday but was unable to complete her round and had to withdraw due to a fever.
"I'm really proud of our great team effort," said George Fox coach MaryJo McCloskey, "especially because the course setup, along with some gusting wind on this links-style course, at times was very challenging. Our total team score was 14 strokes lower than last year in this event. Our team seems to be really coming together well. Loreece had a personal collegiate best today, shooting 74, and overall, I'm very pleased with the consistency and improvement of all our players on our team."
