* COMING UP: Bruins to Host Third Annual Culturame Classic on Oct. 6-7
For the third year in a row, George Fox University will host the Culturame Classic on Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 6-7, at The Reserve Vineyards & Golf Club in Aloha, Ore. Tee times both days are set for 11:45 a.m., there is no admission charge, and the public is invited to attend to see some outstanding small college women’s golf.
The name of the tournament comes from the Spanish word “Culturame” (pronounced “cool-TOO-rah-may”). Debra Del Toro-Phillips, a personal friend of George Fox head coach MaryJo McCloskey, gave that name to her nation-wide company which produces bilingual greeting cards for all occasions in Spanish and English to promote and celebrate cross-cultural friendship and diversity. The company’s web site may be found at www.culturame.com.
“Debra is always looking for ways to get involved in her community, and she offered to sponsor a golf tournament for us two years ago,” explained McCloskey. “In addition to bringing together several fine women’s golf programs, it gives her company added exposure by putting the name out in front of the public.”
In last year’s Classic, the University of Hawai’i-Hilo won for the second year in a row with a 17-over-par score of 299-302=601. George Fox came in second for the second straight year with a 315-309=624, followed by Linfield College with a 329-351=680, Biola University at 341-363=702, Willamette University at 362-355=717, Northwest Christian University at 363-356=719, and Pacific University at 372-385=757. Lewis & Clark College and Simpson University had individuals playing but did not have a foursome necessary for a team score.
Due to a scheduling conflict, Hilo is not back to defend its
title, but there are several returning teams, including Linfield,
Pacific, Northwest Christian, and Simpson. New to the field
this year are Willamette University, Whitworth University, and the
University of California-Santa Cruz.
Results of the Culturame Classic will be posted each evening on the
George Fox women’s golf web site at http://athletics.georgefox.edu/sports/wgolf/index.
