Morrison and Burk Share GFU Bruin Weekly Award; Morrison NWC Golfer of the Week

NEWBERG, Ore. – A third tournament win by golfer Kelsey Morrison and a solid week of over .400 hitting by volleyball player Tiffany Burk have earned them George Fox University Bruin Women’s Co-Athletes of the Week awards for Oct. 1-7, with Morrison also named the Northwest Conference Women’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Week.

Morrison, a senior from Yucca Valley, Calif., shot a 75-76=151 on Oct. 6-7 to win the Culturame Classic hosted by George Fox at The Reserve Vineyards & Golf Club in Aloha, Ore.  She finished three strokes ahead of teammate Kiana Lumanlan, helping the Bruins, who are ranked fifth in the Golf World / National Golf Coaches Association NCAA Division III national poll, to a 29-stroke victory in the eight-team tournament over runner-up Cal-Santa Cruz. 

A First Team All-American last year, Morrison has picked up where she left off by winning both the O’Brien National Invitational Tournament in Notre Dame, Ind., on Sept. 16-17, and the Boxer Classic in Banks, Ore., on Sept.22-23.  She currently ranks No. 1 in the nation in stroke average (74.2).  She was the NWC Women’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Week and the Bruin Women’s Athlete of the Week for Sept. 17-23 for her two tournament wins.

Burk, a sophomore from Baker City, Ore., averaged 3.57 kills with a .429 hitting percentage and 1.57 blocks per set as the Bruins went 1-1 during the week.  In a 3-0 loss at 17th-ranked Pacific Lutheran, she had 6 kills and no errors in 14 attacks for a .429 percentage, with 7 blocks.  In a 3-1 home win over Willamette, she posted a career-high 20 kills with 4 errors in 42 attempts, a .408 percentage, with 2 blocks.  She received honorable mention for NWC Women’s Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time, and won the NWC award for Sept. 17-23.

In the latest NWC statistics, Burk ranks 3rd in blocks (1.10 bps), 4th in hitting pct. (.286), and 14th in kills (2.59 kps).  In NCAA national stats, she is 25th in blocks.      

The George Fox University Bruin Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the sports seasons to recognize and honor outstanding athletic achievements and records by Bruin student-athletes.
