SONOMA STATE INVITATIONAL: Bruins Stand 10th after 1st Day of Sonoma Tournament

SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Surrounded almost entirely by a field of NCAA Division II and NAIA teams, the George Fox University Bruins shot a team score of 323 to stand 10th out of 12 teams after the first round of the Sonoma State University Women’s Golf Invitational which got under way Monday here at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club.

The University of British Columbia holds a one-stroke lead over Grand Canyon University, 301 to 302, with California State University-Monterey Bay right behind at 303.  Augustana College (S.D.) and California State University-East Bay are tied for fourth at 307, followed by host Sonoma State’s Blue team at 310, Sonoma State White and Chico State University at 312, the Academy of Art University at 313, George Fox, Dominican University (Calif.) at 347, and California Lutheran University at 370.  Cal Lutheran is the only other D-III team in the tournament.

The Bruins, who are ranked No. 5 in D-III by Golf World and the National Golf Coaches Association, were led by Kelsey Morrison and Abby Mann, who each shot seven-over-par 79’s on the par-72, 5,809-yard course.  They are tied for 30th in the individual standings.  Also counting for the Bruins on Monday were Whitney Jammerman with an 80, tied for 34th, and Kiana Lumanlan with an 85, tied for 51st.

Melissa Nugent completed the George Fox quintet with an 86, tied for 55th.  Playing as an individual instead of for team scoring, the Bruins’ Hailey Ostrom shot an 82, good for 46th. 

Kylie Barrios of British Columbia had the first day’s best round with a one-under-par 71, one shot ahead of a 72 by Linda Brown of Cal State-East Bay.  Tied for third were Mckenna Correia of Cal State-Monterey Bay and Spencer Heller of Sonoma State Blue, each with a 73.

The tournament will conclude Tuesday, with the first tee times scheduled for 8:30 a.m. in a shotgun start.
