WHITMAN 2, GEORGE FOX 0: Missionaries Turn to Rookies for Win over Bruins

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - With senior captain and leading scorer Corina Gabbert on the sidelines with an injured leg, first-year Missionaries Julianne Masser and Jaclyn Rudd booted their first college goals to propel Whitman College to a 2-0 victory over the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon here at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Masser, assisted by Liz Forbes, opened the scoring in the 15th minute of the first half, launching a high, arcing 45-yard shot from the left flank to the far post. In the second half, Amy Hasson sent a crossing pass from the right corner to the center of the George Fox box, where Rudd was waiting to sweep the ball to the back of the net, giving Whitman a 2-0 lead with just over 20 minutes left to play.
As the game clock slipped below the nine-minute mark, Whitman goalkeeper Courtney Porter preserved her 20th career shutout with a diving block of Katelyn Peer's free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
Porter, a senior who earned All-NWC First Team honors last fall, made five saves against eight George Fox shots. The Missionaries uncorked 22 shots in all, putting seven on goal, with Bruin keeper Becka Doyle making four saves.
George Fox (3-3, NWC 0-2) visits Whitworth University while Whitman (2-2-1, NWC 1-1) hosts Pacific University Sunday, both games at 12:00 noon.
