WSOC: WHITMAN 3, GEORGE FOX 0 Gabberts Goals Lead Missionaries Past Bruins

NEWBERG, Ore. - Corina Gabbert, the second-leading scorer in the Northwest Conference, added two more goals and an assist to her totals while leading the Whitman College Missionaries to a 3-0 win over the George Fox University Bruins in women's soccer on a cold, damp Sunday afternoon here at Morse Field.
Whitman struck quickly at the 2:54 mark when Gabbert lofted a ball from the right side of the penalty box to the near post, where Kristin Innes headed it home from five yards out for her fourth goal of the season. The Missionaries added another goal before the first half ended when Amy Hasson sent a ball from the upper right corner of the box to Gabbert heading toward the far post, and she reversed it into the right corner from eight yards away.
Gabbert added the clincher with her second score of the game and 14th goal of the season four-and-a-half minutes from the end. Libby Watkins launched a corner kick from the right to the far post, where Gabbert easily headed it home to seal the victory.
The visiting Missionaries were a picture of efficiency as they scored three times on only six shots on goal out of their 13 total shots. George Fox had 11 shots in all and four on goal, with Nicole Akiu getting the most opportunities, taking four shots, two on goal. Whitman keeper Courtney Porter made four saves while notching her sixth shutout of the season, while Becka Doyle had three saves for the Bruins.
Both teams return to conference action Saturday at 11:00 a.m., George Fox (6-10, NWC 3-9) hosting the NWC-leading and 2nd-ranked University of Puget Sound and Whitman (7-8-1, NWC 6-7) visiting Linfield College.
