PUGET SOUND 4, GEORGE FOX 0: Trio of Quick Goals Lifts Loggers by Bruins
NEWBERG, Ore. – Held scoreless in the first half by a fiesty George Fox University defense, the University of Puget Sound Loggers erupted for three goals in an 11-minute span early in the second half en route to a 4-0 win over the Bruins in Northwest Conference women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon here at the Austin Sports Complex.
The visiting Loggers out-shot the Bruins 15-1 in the first half, including 6-0 in shots on goal, but George Fox keeper Alyssa Montero made every stop. When the Loggers finally broke through, however, the scores came quickly.
Mikaela Freeman made it 1-0 UPS when she took a cross from the left by Abby Goss and sent it from 15 yards out straight over Montero and just under the crossbar two-and-a-half minutes into the second half. It was her third goal of the season.
Theresa Henle, the Loggers’ top scorer, got the second goal eight minutes later and the third three minutes after that, giving her nine on the season. The first one came after a short cross from the right by Kelly Andersen, and the second was unassisted as she dribbled up the middle through the George Fox defense and scored from seven yards out.
The final Puget Sound score came four minutes from the end. After a corner kick, one of 13 for the Loggers on the day, a header by Piper Frame and a rebound shot by Madie Whitsel near the goal mouth were both blocked by the Bruin defense. Whitsel, however, was able to collect her own carom and send it back into the net from five yards out for her first goal of the year.
UPS finished with 33 shots to two (one by Esther Harder, one by Melanie Gaither) for George Fox, and a 16-0 shots-on-goal advantage. Montero made 12 saves for the Bruins, but Logger goalie Jess Yarbrough went unchallenged in posting the shutout.
The Loggers have won the last five meetings with the Bruins and are 22-0-1 vs. George Fox since the Bruins last beat them 1-0 in Newberg on Oct. 10, 1998.
