BRUIN BITS ---

* Gaither Receives Honorable Mention for NWC Offensive Honors

Melanie Gaither totaled five points on two goals and an assist in the Bruins’ 3-2 win over Lewis & Clark on Oct. 31, earning her honorable mention for the Northwest Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week Oct. 25-31.

Gaither, a sophomore from Vancouver, Wash., who transferred after one season playing for California Baptist, assisted on the Bruins’ first goal against the Pioneers in the first half with a short pass to Sarah Brase, who notched her first score of the season.  In the 63rd minute in the second half, Gaither gathered in a loose ball in full stride midway between the center circle and the penalty box and out-raced every defender to take the keeper one-on-one, winning that battle with a shot to the lower right corner to make it 2-0.  After the game was tied, Shannon Olson put a ball through the middle and Gaither caught up to it, taking the goalie one-on-one again and rolling another shot into the right corner for her fourth goal of the year.  She finished the game with six shots, four on goal.

Gaither currently ranks 4th in assists (4, T) and 10th in points (12, T) in the NWC.  She leads the Bruins in shots (32), shots on goal (15), assists, and is tied for the lead in goals with Kirsten Cardwell.  She also received honorable mention for NWC honors for Sept. 20-26.
