NORTHWEST 3, GEORGE FOX 1: Bruins Score First in Opener but Eagles Rally to Win
KIRKLAND, Wash. - Two goals late in the first half enabled Northwest University to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and the Eagles added another score late in the second half to defeat the visiting George Fox University Bruins 3-1 in a non-conference women’s soccer match Thursday afternoon here at the NU Athletic Field.
It was the first win of the season for the Eagles of the NAIA, who had dropped two games in southern California last week, while it was the season opener for the NCAA Division III Bruins.
Cori Jo Young put George Fox up 1-0 with an unassisted goal 18:24 into the game, and the Bruins held the Eagles scoreless for 24 more minutes until the 42:21 mark when Jordyn Wilson got loose from a GFU defender and knocked one in from 15 yards out in the center of the field. Annie-Brynn Stauffer picked up the game-winner for Northwest two minutes later at the 44:29 mark, just before the end of the first half, with a header off a deflection by Bruin goalkeeper Alyssa Montero.
The second half remained scoreless until Rachel Saleen found the goal net from 15 yards out at 82:42 just right of center off Abby Brauer's assist, giving the Eagles some valuable insurance.
Northwest outshot George Fox 21-7, with a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Montero had three saves for the Bruins, while Northwest’s Jordan Holmes had three stops as well.
