NEWBERG, Ore. – A strong effort in the goal that kept the George Fox women’s soccer team close in an eventual 1-0 loss to the Willamette Bearcats has earned goalkeeper Ally Swanson honorable mention for the Northwest Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week award for games of Sept. 24-30.

Swanson, a freshman from Roseburg, Ore., faced 14 total shots in the game on Sept. 30 at the Austin Sports Complex, eight of them on goal, and saved seven of them.  The Bearcats finally squeezed in the lone goal of the game on a well-executed cross and header in the 60th minute.  Swanson’s performance gave the Bruins a chance to win despite their offensive struggles which only managed three shots in the game, none on goal.

In the latest Northwest Conference statistics, Swanson ranks 5th in fewest goals allowed (7, T), 7th in goals against avg. (1.28), 8th in save pct. (.767), and 10th in saves (23).

* COMING UP: Bruins Hit the Road to PLU, L&C This Weekend

Oct. 6, 12:00 pm - at Pacific Lutheran University (2-1-5, NWC 0-1-5), Parkland, Wash.

Oct. 7, 12:00 pm - at Lewis & Clark College (2-5-2, NWC 2-2-2), Portland, Ore.

Still seeking that elusive first Northwest Conference win of the 2012 season, the George Fox Bruins (1-7-2, NWC 0-6) hit the road for a pair of league matchups this weekend, taking on the Pacific Lutheran University Lute Saturday in Parkland, Wash., and the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers Sunday in Portland, Ore., both games kicking off at 12:00 noon.

Defensively, the Bruins have been one of the best teams in the league thus far, allowing only 1.13 goals per game, but their inability to get a timely score has resulted in six straight losses, all in the conference, and four of them by a single goal.  The Bruins have allowed one goal or none in seven of their 10 contests.
