PORTLAND, Ore. – A penalty kick goal by Michelle Young got the George Fox University Bruins off to a fast start two minutes into their Northwest Conference women's soccer game at Lewis & Clark College's Griswold Stadium here Sunday afternoon - then the wheels fell off as the Pioneers scored six unanswered goals en route to a 6-1 runaway win.
Young gave the Bruins a short-lived lead at the 2:10 mark in the first half when a Pioneer foul in the keeper's box gave her a free kick, and she nailed her third goal of the season with a shot past Pio keeper Geena Fong. That, however, was the only shot on goal Fong and backup goalie Marisa Santarella, who worked the final 13 minutes, faced all day as the L&C defense limited the Bruins to three shots in the game.
Traci Nakamura started the Pios on the comeback trail when she knocked in a corner kick from Emilia Emmetti just under six minutes later. Nakamura assisted on the next and game-winning goal when she drove into the middle of the box and passed outside to Taylor Hudson, whose quick shot found an opening. That 2-1 score lasted through the rest of the half.
The Bruin defense, which had allowed no more than three goals in a game all season, broke down under the Pioneers' second-half onslaught. It took the home team only 46 seconds to score in the final period, Hudson beating Bruin keeper Alyssa Montero one-on-one after a cross by Emily Thompson. Five minutes later, Thompson found the back of the net after breaking through the defense and shooting past Montero.
The Pioneers added another goal by Nakamura in the 73rd minute when she headed the ball in off a corner kick by Anna Thorndike. Sarah Breninger closed out the Pioneers' assault by putting in a rebound off a shot by Emmetti that hit the crossbar in the 76th minute.
Lewis & Clark finished with 20 total shots, 11 on goal, with Montero making five saves. The Pios also held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
