LEWIS & CLARK 6, GEORGE FOX 3: Bruins Fall for 5th Straight Time as Pios Prevail
PORTLAND, Ore. – Capturing twice as many matches as
the visiting George Fox University Bruins, the Lewis & Clark
College Pioneers handed the Bruins their fifth setback in a row
with a 6-3 win in Northwest Conference women’s tennis action
Saturday here at the L&C Tennis Bubble.
The Bruins took one doubles match and two
singles. In doubles, Courtney Banks and Betsy
Ann Penman gave the Bruins their lone point with an 8-5 victory
over the Pios’ Mika Yokoyama and Alix Dixon at No.
2. At No. 1 doubles, Amalia Nilsson and Whitney
DeBree blanked the Bruins’ Mollee Robinson and Corinne
Borrelli 8-0, while Paige Earhart and Jill Coleman of L&C took
the measure of Shanna Lesire and Lauren Miller 8-3 at No. 3.
Robinson and Liliya Abildayev earned the George Fox singles
points, Robinson taking down Earhart in a closely-contested match
3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at No. 3, and Abildayev splitting sets with
Yokoyama before winning the tiebreaker 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2).
The Pioneers picked up singles wins at No. 1 as Nilsson knocked
off Banks 6-0, 6-1; at No. 2,DeBree bouncing Borrelli 6-0, 6-3; at
No. 4 as Clio Beatty dropped Lesire 6-2, 7-6 (7-4); and at No. 5,
where Coleman downed Penman 6-1, 6-1.
Georg e Fox (1-5, NWC 1-5) next visits the University of Puget
Sound Friday at 3:00 p.m. Lewis & Clark
(2-3, NWC 2-3) hosts Willamette University Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
