LEWIS & CLARK 8, GEORGE FOX 1: Short-Handed Bruins Drop 5th Straight to Pioneers

PORTLAND, Ore. - In their third straight match with a five-person lineup due to a shortage of available players, the George Fox University Bruins were again unable to overcome a 0-2 disadvantage at the start of a match and fell 8-1 to the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers in Northwest Conference women’s tennis action Saturday afternoon here at the L&C Tennis Dome.

The Bruins were again forced to begin play by defaulting the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches due to the absence of No. 6 player Bethany Nguyen, who is absent while dealing with some personal matters, and thus dropped their fifth match in a row.

George Fox did manage to split the doubles, winning at No. 2 as Allyssa Emoto and Shaina Inn defeated Jill Coleman and Olivia Sweetman 8-4, but falling 8-3 at No. 1 as the Pios’ Amalia Nilsson and Isabelle Borris bested Molly Beaumont and Cara Griffith.

Lewis & Clark then proceeded to win the five singles matches that were played.  Nilsson swept Emoto 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; Borris beat Beaumont 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 2; Coleman downed Inn 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3; Sweetman stopped Griffith 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4; and Makena McCluskey ousted Liliya Abildayeva 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.
