GEORGE FOX 7, LINDENWOOD 2: Bruins Dispatch Lady Lions to Finish 4-1 Florida Trip
ORLANDO, Fla. - Finishing their five-game Orlando Spring Break trip with a flourish, the George Fox University Bruins knocked off the NCAA Division II Lindenwood University Lady Lions 7-2 in women’s tennis action Monday here at the Star Island Resort’s tennis courts, completing a 4-1 sojourn around central Florida.
The Bruins breezed through the doubles in relatively-easy fashion to build an early 3-0 lead. Molly Beaumont and Shaina Inn rolled to an 8-4 win over Adela Slovakova and Mariona Pinol at No. 1, Alyssa Emoto and Cara Griffith cruised past Rachel Bailey and Sarah Sharpe 8-2 at No. 2, and Marissa Chau and Bethany Nguyen beat Brigitte Bustamante and Lindsey Wolfgang at No. 3 by the same 8-2 score.
“Lindenwood looked a little confused in their doubles matches,” observed George Fox coach Rick Cruz, “and I was a bit surprised at how easily we handled them. They sharpened up and played much more consistently in singles, though, and we had to play well to pull out some of those matches.”
Pinol swept Emoto 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and the Lions’ Shreeja Karki split sets with the Bruins’ Alissandra Wittrig before prevailing 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 6 to get Lindenwood back in the match, but the Bruins settled down to win the four remaining matches and secure the victory. Beaumont was down 4-1 in the second set but rallied for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Slovakova at No. 1, and Inn won the last three games to post a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bustamante at No. 3. Griffith pulled out a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sharpe at No. 4, and Chantelle Hadeed took a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 win over Bailey at No. 5.
The Bruins posted wins over Elmhurst University 8-1, Hamline College 7-2, and Calvin College 7-2 to start their Orlando trip before falling Sunday to West Region foe Whittier College 9-0.
