PUGET SOUND 7, GEORGE FOX 2: Loggers Prove Stumbling Block to Streaking Bruins
TACOMA, Wash. - After winning five of their last six matches to pull within a game of a .500 record, the George Fox University Bruins tripped over the University of Puget Sound Loggers Saturday afternoon here at the UPS Tennis Pavilion, dropping a 7-2 Northwest Conference women’s tennis decision in their final road match of the season.
The Bruins picked up wins at the No. 1 position in both doubles and singles, but the rest of the matches belonged to the Loggers. Molly Beaumont and Shaina Inn gave the Bruins an 8-2 win in doubles over the Loggers’ Maddison Holtz and Josephine Dow, and Beaumont scored a 6-3, 6-3 win over Holtz in singles.
UPS got doubles wins from Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman over Alyssa Emoto and Cara Griffith 8-3 at No. 2, and from Ada Yu and Maddie Thiesse over Bethany Nguyen and Marissa Chau 8-3 at No. 3.
Logger singles wins went Jenna Gerdsen over Emoto 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 2; Thompson over Inn 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3; Dow over Griffith 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 at No. 4; Thiesse over Chantelle Hadeed 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5; and Friedman over Alissandra Wittrig 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
George Fox slipped to 7-9 overall and is now tied for seventh in the conference with Lewis & Clark College at 2-7. Puget Sound improved to 8-8 and 7-5 in the conference as the Loggers held onto fourth place in the league and moved closer to securing one of the four spots in the NWC Tournament.
