WHITWORTH 8, GEORGE FOX 1: Bruins Fall to Pirates in Next-to-Last Match of Season
NEWBERG, Ore. - In what would have been their last match of the season except for a rainout earlier in the week, the George Fox University Bruins fell to the Whitworth University Pirates, who are ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division’s West Region, 8-1 in a Northwest Conference women’s tennis match Saturday here at the GFU campus courts.
The Pirates began their plunder of the Bruins by taking the three doubles. Alli Marshall and Erica Bosman beat Molly Beaumont and Shaina Inn 8-4 at No. 1, Jessi Steele and Saryn Mooney snuck past Alyssa Emoto and Cara Griffith 9-8 (7-3) at No. 2, and Morgan McDivitt and Megan Wingfield won over Bethany Nguyen and Marissa Chau 8-3 at No. 3.
Beaumont gave the Bruins their only victory of the day as she rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Marshall at No. 1 singles. The rest of the matches were captured by the Pirates as Bosman bounced Emoto 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2; Mooney downed Inn 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3; Steele squeezed past Griffith 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at No. 4; Wingfield ralled from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to nip Chantelle Hadeed 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5; and Janell Talbot prevailed over Alissandra Wittrig 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
NEXT: George Fox (7-11, NWC 2-9) hosts Willamette University Sunday at 11:00 a.m. to complete a match that was started back on Apr. 10 but eventually halted by rain. Play will resume early in the first singles sets after the Bruins had taken a 2-1 lead by winning two of the three doubles. It will be the final match of the season for the Bruins, while the Bearcats can still make the NWC Tournament with a win ... Whitworth (13-5, NWC 9-3),which is third in the conference, entertains Lewis-Clark State College Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. in a non-conference tilt before playing in the NWC Tournament on Apr. 21-22.
