NORTHWEST REGIONAL: Doubles Teams Advance Furthest for Bruins in Fall Regional

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Two doubles teams - Molly Beaumont and Shaina Inn in the main draw and Bethany Nguyen and Alissandra Wittrig in the consolation bracket - advanced the furthest for the George Fox University Bruins in the USTA / ITA Small College Northwest Regional Women’s Tennis Championships Saturday-Sunday here at Whitman College.

Beaumont and Inn reached the semifinals of the main draw with a trio of wins.  They opened with a win over Tina Aarsvold and Payton McGriff of Pacific Lutheran University, downed Marissa Friedman and Logan Thompson of the University of Puget Sound 8-3, and topped Rachel Heringer and Denise Poltavski of Willamette University 8-5.  Their run came to end when Jenna Dobrin and Morgan Lawless of Whitman ousted them 8-1.

Nguyen and Wittrig dropped their first-round match in the main draw 8-0 to top-seeded Courtney Lawless and Alyssa Roberg of Whitman.  In the consolation, they defeated Elise Derby and Stephanie Matsuura of Willamette and Holly Dixon and Jenna Gerdsen of Puget Sound, the latter by default, before falling to Kwynn Ecton and Kelly Watanabe of Linfield College in the semifinals.

The Bruins’ Alyssa Emoto and Aleassa Wren won their first-round match over Amber Craviotto and Kelsey Lack of Pacific University, then fell to fourth-seeded Saryn Mooney and Taylor Pena of Whitworth University 8-0. 

In singles, Beaumont and Inn took first-round victories.  Beaumont defeated Matsuura of Willamette 6-0, 6-0 before bowing to Kate Rubenstein of Whitman 6-0, 6-2.  Inn knocked off Olivia Sweetman of Lewis & Clark College 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4), but was swept by Courtney Lawless of Whitman, the second seed, 6-0, 6-0.

Bruins who went out in the first round of the main draw were Nguyen to Friedman of UPS 6-2, 6-3; Wittrig to Thompson of UPS 7-5, 6-2; Emoto to No. 8 seed Mooney of Whitworth 6-2, 6-1; and Chantelle Hadeed to Heringer of Willamette 6-1, 6-7 (7-4), 1-0 (10-8). 

In the consolation bracket, Flight A, Wittrig and Emoto reached the finals.  Each got a first-round bye, then Wittrig defeated Craviotto of Pacific 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) and Allison McClure of Pacific Lutheran 8-2.  Emoto posted wins over Jessica Lancaster of PLU and Allison Embernate of UPS to set up a finals meeting with teammate Wittrig Monday at 9:00 a.m.

In Flight C of the consolation bracket, Nguyen dropped her first-round match to Maddy Webster of Whitman.  Hadeed defeated McKenna McCluskey of Lewis & Clark in Flight D before falling to Francesca Battaglia of Pacific.

The singles and doubles champions, which will be determined Monday, will advance to the USTA / ITA / Small College Fall National Championships on Oct. 11-14 at the Cox-Copeland Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
