SPOKANE, Wash. ---- The George Fox women's tennis team came away with a huge 5-4 win over the Pirates of Whitworth University, Saturday afternoon.
The start of the match wasn't in favor of the Bruins, as the Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles.
The Bruins switched gears going into singles, and Ellen Pearson got the ball rolling with a straight set victory over Emma Jo Wiley at No. 2 singles. Catrina Kwong and Sarah Tuemmler followed suit, winning both of their matches to keep the Bruins' hopes alive. Andrea Motley gave the Bruins a 4-3 lead after winning at No. 4 singles, but the Pirates struck back with a win at No. 6 singles.
The match rested on the hands of Bruins' Lydia Pia and Pirates' Paige Rohrbach at No. 5 singles. Pia won the first set, 6-4, and won the tiebreaker 10-8 in the second set to seal the Bruins' first Northwest Conference victory of the season.
What It Means:
With the win, the Bruins are now 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the NWC.
