NEWBERG, Ore. – Two fine defensive performances during a 1-1 week by George Fox University’s Chelsea Wilson have earned the Bruins’ starting libero honorable mention for the Northwest Conference Women’s Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week award for Oct. 8-14, the second time this season she has been so honored.
Wilson, a junior from Ewa Beach, Hawai’i, began the week by making a match-high 22 digs as the Bruins won 3-1 at Lewis & Clark on Oct. 10. She also served a pair of aces, handed out one assist, and had one kill in four attacks. In a 3-1 home loss to Pacific on Oct. 12, she recorded 29 digs to lead all players, with two more service aces and another assist. For the week, in eight sets she totaled 51 digs (6.38 dps), four service aces (0.50 saps), two assists, and one kill in eight attempts.
In the NWC, Wilson currently ranks 2nd in digs (5.54) and 6th in service aces (0.35). In NCAA nationals stats, she is 41st in digs per set. She also received honorable mention for NWC honors for Sept. 3-9.

Hoping to remain in the top half of the Northwest Conference standings, the George Fox Bruins close the season with five of their last six matches on the road, including the next four in a row. This weekend’s task find the Bruins in Tacoma, Wash., on Friday to take on the 15th-ranked University of Puget Sound, followed by a visit to Yamhill County rival Linfield College in McMinnville on Saturday. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
In their first meetings this season in Newberg, the UPS Loggers defeated the Bruins 3-0 (30-28, 25-18, 25-20) on Sept. 21, while the Bruins knocked off the Linfield Wildcats 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 25-21, 27-25) on Sept. 22.

George Fox (9-10, NWC 6-4, 4th): The Bruins, who were picked 6th in the NWC pre-season poll, split their two games last week. In a 3-1 win at Lewis & Clark on Oct. 10, the Bruins were led by Erin Campbell and Lucy Capron, who had 13 and 12 kills respectively, and 22 digs by Chelsea Wilson. In a 3-1 home loss to Pacific on Oct. 12, Capron had nine kills and Tiffany Burk eight, but the offense was held to its lowest hitting pct. of the season (.053). Wilson made 29 digs.
Puget Sound (13-5, NWC 7-3, 2nd T): The Loggers from Tacoma, Wash., were picked 3rd in the NWC pre-season poll ... PLU is ranked 15th in the latest AVCA NCAA Division III national poll ... Last game: PLU was upset 3-2 at Whitworth on Oct. 13 despite 17 kills by Jackie Harvey and16 by Nicolette Reynaud, ending a two-game winning streak ... Chelsea Wilson’s current pace of 5.54 digs per set would rank as the 2nd-best in a single-season to Patti Reeves’ 5.88 in 2010.
* COACH STEVE GRANT:
Head coach Steve Grant (Biola ’69) has a career record to date of 585-404 (.592) in his 31st season at George Fox. Entering this season, he ranked 14th in victories among currently-active NCAA Division III coaches, and 22nd all-time among D-III coaches. He led the Bruins to NCCAA national championships in 1984 and 1987, earning NCCAA National Coach of the Year honors both times, and was the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1998 as the Bruins won the NWC and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament.
