BIG WAVE INVITATIONAL: Bruins Men Finish 3rd, Women 4th in 5K Races in Hawai’i

HONOLULU, Hawai’i – In two early-morning 5K races here at the at the Kane’ohe Kipper Golf Course on the northeast side of Oahu, the George Fox University Bruins finished third out of five teams in the men’s event and the Bruin women’s team came in fourth out of seven in the University of Hawai’i-Manoa’s Big Wave Cross Country Invitational.

Men

The George Fox men collected 76 points for third place, trailing the University of Alaska-Anchorage with 15 points and Brigham Young University-Hawai’i with 62.  Hawai’i Pacific University was fourth with 99 points, and Chaminade University had 133.

Joseph Pia had the Bruins’ best finish as he took 10th overall and ninth for team scoring with a time of 16:29.  Also scoring for George Fox were Kyle Dreibelbis, who was 14th/12th with a 16:46; Kody Tarbell, who was 18th/15th in 16:51; Bryant Quinn, 22nd/19th in 17:03; and Connor Niemi, 24th/21st in 17:09.  Other Bruin runners included Aaron Molstad (29th, 17:33), Austin Morrell (36th, 17:47), and Mike Calavan (40th, 18:04).  

Micah Chelimo of Alaska-Anchorage topped teammate Dylan Anthony 15:43 to 15:47 to win the individual title.  UAA placed runners in the top five positions and six of the top seven scoring positions.

Women

The Bruin women had 122 points to finish fourth.  Ahead of them were Alaska-Anchorage with 20 points, Hawai’i Pacific with 58, and BYU-Hawai’i with 70.  Behind George Fox were the NCAA Division I University of Hawai’i-Manoa with 133 points, Chaminade with 171, and the University of Hawai’i-Hilo with 180.

Kelsey Prentice was the top runner for the Bruins, placing 18th overall and 15th for team scoring with a mark of 19:57.  Other Bruin counting times came from Courtney Hochstetler, who was 28th/22nd with a 20:38; Brooke Nolte, who was 29th/23rd with a 20:44; Sarah MacKenzie, 37th/30th with a 21:32; and Chelsea Sowards, 39th/32nd with a 21:51.  Also running for the Bruins were Alyssa Turner (41st, 21:54) and Kelly Toms (47th, 22:33).

Susan Tanui captured the individual title with a time of 18:09, followed by Polina Babkina of Hawai’i Pacific with an 18:16.  UAA had four of the top five finishers and six of the top eight.

NEXT:  George Fox will run in the Sundodger Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington, at Lincoln Park in Seattle on Saturday, Sept. 15.  The Bruins will compete in the women’s 6K Open race at 9:00 a.m., with the men in the 8K Open race at 9:40 a.m.  The event also features college Invitational races and several runs for high schoolers.
