PORTLAND, Ore. - Three George Fox University relievers pitched
seven shutout innings, Ryan Fobert went 3-for-3, and Dan
Winterstein threw out the tying run at the plate in the 9th inning
as the Bruins knocked off the NCAA Division I University of
Portland Pilots for the second straight time 3-2 in a
non-conference baseball game Sunday afternoon here at Joe Etzel
Field.
Portland, coming off a doubleheader sweep of Brigham Young
University Saturday, got on the board in the bottom of the 1st with
an unearned run, despite Bruin southpaw Brady Rhodes striking out
the side. Riley Henricks led off with a single to center, stole
second, and scored when second baseman Kyle Seymour mishandled
Chase Powell's grounder. The Pilots made it 2-0 in the 2nd when
C.J. Cullen reached on a forceout, moved to second on a Henricks
single to right, and came in when Rhodes hit Cory Wiltshire and
Powell back-to-back.
The Bruins tied it in the top of the 3rd with a two-out rally
against Portland starter Brian Yoakum. Pat Bailey doubled to right
center, his sixth consecutive hit over three games, and scored when
Matt Wyckoff doubled to left center. Fobert followed with a single
down the right field line to drive in Wyckoff with the tying run.
Preston Langeliers threw a scoreless 3rd and 4th for the Bruins
and then Shane Dalgleish (1-0) took over, allowing two hits and two
walks with two strikeouts in four scoreless frames. He picked up
the win when George Fox broke through in the 8th against lefty
reliever Scott Burris (0-1). Fobert led off with a line single to
right, was sacrificed to second by Kyle Kuenzi, and scored on Todd
Siler's two-out double down the left field line.
Brian Davis came on in the bottom of the 9th to gain the save,
but not without some excitement. He walked pinch-hitter Jeff Arbayo
and Henricks to start the inning, but caught a break when
Wiltshire, trying to sacrifice, fouled out to Fobert behind the
plate. Powell followed with a line single to right, and Winterstein
threw a strike on the fly to Fobert, catching Arbayo trying to
score by a good 10 feet for the second out. Paul Crowder then lined
out to Wyckoff at first to end the game.
The Bruins and Pilots last played in 2006, with George Fox
taking that meeting 7-3. Portland leads the all-time series 17-5.
George Fox (3-2) begins Northwest Conference play next weekend,
hosting Pacific University Saturday and Sunday for a pair of
doubleheaders at 11:00 a.m. both days. Saturday's games are
nine-innings contests, while Sunday's will be seven each. Portland
(2-2) hosts Concordia University-Portland Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in a
non-league game.
