SAN ANTONIO, Texas --- Two home runs by right fielder Austin Singer were just enough to help Trinity University sneak by the George Fox University Bruins on Saturday morning, 7-5, despite the fact that the Bruins outhit Trinity 10-8.
The Bruins struck first, as Trinity's battery began shakily. Clay Mott singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and progressed to third on Zach Rapacz's bunt single. Mott scored on another wild pitch to open the scoring, and the Bruins added another in the second: Gabe Louthan singled, stole second, and came around on leadoff hitter AJ Valencia's single. After one and a half innings, the Bruins led, 2-0.
Trinity responded in their half of the second, hanging three runs on Bruins starter Tom Zarosinski. After a strikeout, Zarosinski plunked McEachern and allowed a single to Jewett. Zerosinski rebounded to fan Garhart, but with two outs Singer launched his first home run of the game, and Trinity took the lead, 3-2.
The Bruins bounced back and regained the lead in the third on catcher Tyler Hamilton's RBI single and Jacob Woehler's RBI groundout, but, undaunted, Trinity surged in the bottom of the inning.
After a flyout, Zarosinski nailed Serkowski, who went to second on Zarosinski's error. Two subsequent singles saw Trinity draw the score, 4-4.
The Bruins added another in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead, as Valencia scored from second on yet another wild pitch, but the run would be the Bruins' last of the game. Trinity added one in the fifth to tie the score 5-5, and then pushed across single runs in the 7th and 8th to win 7-5, the last on Singer's second homer of the night.
The top of the Bruins lineup, Valencia, Mott, and Rapacz, all had a pair of hits. Zarosinski gave up five in four innings of work but escaped with the no-decision, as reliever Sam Moreland took the loss.
The Bruins now stand at 2-1 with their first loss of the season. They will finish their four-game road trip against Concordia (Texas) tomorrow afternoon. The Bruins kicked off their season against the Tornados on Friday, February 6 earning their first win of the season, 2-1.
