Torey Smith finished his fifth season under head coach Chris Casey as an assistant coach after coaching at Newberg (Ore.) High School the prior eight years.
Smith began at Newberg High as a freshman assistant coach and worked his way up to junior varsity head coach and varsity running backs coach. He was also a coach and board member of Newberg’s youth football program.
Originally from Newport News, Va., Smith’s family relocated to Honolulu, Hawai’i, where he played both running back and linebacker for Radford High School. He played at Linfield College, where Chris Casey was the defensive ends coach and Ken Ingram, now an assistant coach for the Bruins was his teammate.
Smith earned his degree in computer science from Linfield in 1991 and has worked for the last 10 years as a software analyst for Daimler Trucks North America.
He and his college sweetheart, Christy, a teacher at Mabel Rush Elementary School in Newberg, have been married for 22 years. The Smiths have three children Evan, Brenna, and Alanna.
