A Winning Tradition

  • One NWC Player of the Year (Alex Plusquellec, 2017-18)
  • Two Division III PING All-Region Team
  • Six All-NWC Athletes

NEWBERG, Ore. --- With the 2016 season a day away, the George Fox men's golf team is prepared and ready to show what they are made of.

Seven men makeup the 2016 squad and Brandon Sutton and Zach Mode are the only seniors on the team. Last year, Sutton played in eight rounds for the Bruins and shot a low-round of 73 at the PLU Invitational. He had a scoring average of 79.38 and recorded two Top 20 finishes. Mode, on the other hand, played in six rounds in his junior campaign and also shot a low-round of 73 at the PLU Invitational. He also recorded two Top 20 finishes.

The Bruins will kick off their season playing in the Willamette Cup, which features two different courses for the tournament. On day one, teams will head up to McMinnville, Oregon to play at Michelbook CC and day two will be played at Chehalem golf course in Newberg.

Head Coach Branden Thompson enters his third year at the helm of the program and has already transformed the culture of the team. Last year, Thompson coached his team to their highest finish in program history at the Northwest Conference Championship with a fourth place finish.

We want to get better each and every day on the course," said Thompson. "I'm looking forward to the guys improving and developing as we play throughout the year. In a way, we want to live for the weekend. We want to approach this season like we would approach a shot, one swing at a time."

The Bruins will also look to sophomores Caleb An and Alex Plusquellec to make some moves out on the course.

"Caleb and Alex are ready to compete individually for some titles, but also lead this team in scoring," added Thompson. "They will be our leaders out on the course and I'm expecting big things from the pair."

"We have some fun tournaments schedule this year," explained Thompson. "We head down to California to compete against a tough Div. II field that's hosted by California Baptist. We have changed the culture here a little bit and we want to get it to a championship level. The guys continue to improve and I'm looking forward for the years to come."
