Bruins Break School Record In Opening Round at CA State Intercollegiate

VENTURA, Calif. --- It was a program-best day for the George Fox men's golf team, as the Bruins shot a team score of 291 to finish round one in sixth place at the CA State Intercollegiate.

The Bruins 291 beats the previous school record by one stroke, which was set back in Sept. 26, 2015, at the PLU Invitational.

Chapman University leads the field with a team score of 285, while host California Lutheran is in second with a 286. The 2016 NCAA Division III National Champions Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sit in third with a score of 288.

The Bruins record breaking day started with the play of senior Alex Plusquellec, who finished up round one tied for sixth with a 1-under-par 71. Sophomore Mason Koch and freshman Joshua Lackey both finished their day with an even-par 72 to sit at T-11th. Lackey's even-par round is the lowest 18-hole score by a freshman in their collegiate debut in the men's golf program. Mason Mueller was the final scorer for the Bruins, shooting a 76 to finish T-45th. Caleb Fernandez sits in 59th with an 86.

There were 60 golfers competing in the opening round.

What Comes Next:

The Bruins will look to follow up their electric round Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the final round of the tournament. The shotgun start will sound off at 8 a.m.
