WALLA WALLA ---The George Fox men's golf team played in the Northwest Conference Championship tournament on Saturday and Sunday, April 27 & 28, finishing in second after a standout performance trio of standout performances and a medalist finish by Joshua Lackey.

The Bruins sat ten strokes off the lead after round one with a team score of 319, one back from second place behind Linfield and ten back of Willamette.

Mason Koch led the Bruins after round one with a card of 77 and Dante Heitschmidt was just behind after shooting a 79. Lackey finished third on the team with a card of 80 through day one.

Day two bought new determination for the Bruins and George Fox led the clubhouse around the links in the second play-through. The Bruins shot a tourney-best 288 – the second-best single round in team history – on the second day as a team, led by a team-record performance from Lackey.

Lackey shot a team-best – and new school record – round of 67 in round two to finish as the medalist for the tournament. The Bruins' round of 288 was made possible by the fact that no individual shot above a 75 in round two.

Top Performers:

Lackey was the medalist for the 45-golfer field, finishing with a card of 147 after cutting 13 strokes off his round-one total. Koch finished tied for sixth with a 77-74=151 and Heitschmidt ended the tournament in eighth with a 79-74=153 as the third Bruin in tenth place.

What It Means:

The Bruins finish a program-best at third in the NWC standings after a second-place finish in the NWC Championships. The NWC Tournament is worth half of the overall title, while the NWC Fall Classic and the NWC Spring Classic combine to cover the other half. Points are awarded to the teams at the Fall Classic and the Spring Classic on a descending 8-7-6-5-etc. scale and the NWC Tournament doubles that scoring metric, being scored as 16-14-12-10-etc. The Bruins' two fourth-place finishes in the Fall & Spring Classics, combined with their second-place finish in the NWC Championship, put George Fox in third with 24 points (5-5-14).
