A Winning Tradition
Watanabe had to battle early after dropping his opening match and working his way out of the consolation bracket. Watanabe did well to take down Tommy Koszowski in the opening round with a three set match. He beat Koszowski, 6-7, 7-6, 10-7. In the quarterfinal of the consolation, he ran into Ruthwick Pathireddy, who forced another three set match with the top Bruin. Watanabe fell 7-5, 3-6, 10-8.
The freshman Namba had a quick victory in the round of 32 taking down Derik Nguyen, 6-2, 6-2. Namba then advanced to the round of 16, where he faced off against No. 6 Clark Winniger, who beat Namba, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.
The pair had a tough draw in doubles, as they faced No. 4 Cummins/Lipscomb of Redlands. The two fell in the round of 16, 8-5.
All hope wasn't lost, though, as the two had another great showing in the consolation bracket. They beat Koszowksi/You and moved on to the semifinal. With another tough match, they outlasted Pathireddy/Pathireddy by a score of 8-6. One match away from seizing the top honor in the consolation bracket, the pair had a gutsy match that resulted in a tough 9-7 loss. The two lost to Gearou/Massen in a back-and-forth double match.
