A Winning Tradition
NEWBERG --- The George Fox men's tennis team pulled off the upset Monday evening, as the Bruins beat the No. 38 Southwestern Pirates, 7-2.
The Bruins were looking for the upset early as Alex Namba and Payton Namba were the first to get the Bruins on the board. The Namba brothers took down the No. 2 spot with an 8-3 win. Jonah Wafula and Justin Barton produced an exciting match in front of the home fans, as the Wafula/Barton tag team won a gut-wrenching match, 9-7. Spencer Watanabe and William Leach ran into a tough matchup at the No. 1 spot in doubles. The pair lost a close one 8-6 to give the Pirates their first point of the match.
With a 2-1 lead heading into singles, Keaton Baker was perfect at the No. 5 spot with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Payton Namba won his match at the No. 4 spot with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Watanabe got his revenge at the No. 1 spot in singles with a 6-4, 6-7 win over Alexis Dimanche. Leach also had his revenge, pulling off a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot. Jonah Wafula recorded the final point for the Bruins at the No. 6 spot with a 6-2, 6-3 win.
What It Means:
With the win, the Bruins improve to 6-1 on the season.
