No. 35 Bruins Clinch NWC Tournament Spot After Win Over 'Cats

BEAVERTON --- The No. 35-ranked George Fox men's tennis team clinched a spot in the Northwest Conference Tournament, Sunday afternoon, as the Bruins beat the 'Cats of Linfield College, 8-1.


The No. 7-ranked doubles team of Spencer Watanabe and Will Leach helped the Bruins kick off the dominant day with an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot. Alex Namba and Payton Namba were in sync at the No. 2 spot, grabbing the second point with an 8-6 victory. Linfield's only point on the day came in a back and forth No. 3 battle that saw Justin Barton and Keaten Baker narrowly fall, 9-7.

With a 2-1 lead after doubles, the Bruins were in full force for singles play.

Watanabe, who is currently No. 7 in the nation in singles play continued his dominant senior season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Leach provided a big win at the No. 2 spot with a 6-2, 6-4 win, while Baker was solid at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win.

P. Namba closed out his match at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win and Nick Ekern closed the match out with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 spot.

What It Means:

The Bruins improve to 11-4 on the season and 5-2 in the NWC. This marks the fifth time in the last six seasons the Bruins have clinched a spot in the NWC Tournament.

The Bruins end the regular season against Pacific (Ore.) Sunday, April 15 on the road at 1 pm.
