Bruins End Conference With Big Win Over Boxers

FOREST GROVE --- The No. 33-ranked George Fox men's tennis team closed out the Northwest Conference season with a bang Sunday, as the Bruins blasted by Pacific University, 8-1.


The hot performance all started in doubles for the Bruins. Spencer Watanabe and Will Leach kicked off the match with a brilliant 8-6 win at the No. 1 spot. Alex Namba and Payton Namba kept the party going with an 8-4 win at the No. 2 spot to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead going into singles.

The Bruins were on fire once singles got underway, as the first four points came in straight sets. Watanabe won his match at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-3, while Leach captured a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. A. Namba secured a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot and Keaten Baker won his match 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Payton Namba and Nick Ekern both had the toughest two matches of the day in singles.

P. Namba came out strong with a first set victory of 6-3, but dropped his second set, 7-5. It didn't seem to faze the freshman, as he came away with a 1-0 (10-7) victory to keep the Bruins perfect. Ekern had a gut-wrenching match at the final spot with a 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (13-11) victory.

What It Means:

With the win over the Boxers, the Bruins move up to third in the NWC standings at 6-2. The Bruins will enter the conference tournament as the 3-seed.

The Bruins will kick off the NWC Tournament April 21.
