A Winning Tradition
NEWBERG --- The quest to compete in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship starts on April 27th for the No. 32-ranked men's tennis team, as the Bruins will send Spencer Watanabe, Will Leach and Alex Namba to the NCAA Div. III West Championships.
In order to grab a spot at the NCAA Div. III Men's Tennis Championship, the three Bruins will have to finish inside the top-8 at the West Championships in Ojai, California.
This is the third straight year the Bruins will have athletes competing at the West Championships and the first time the Bruins will have three players in the field of singles and a team in doubles.
Watanabe, Leach and Namba will all compete in singles action, while Watanabe and Leach will team up in doubles. All three were named to the All-NWC Team after the regular season completed and Watanabe became the first Bruin to earn NWC Player of the Year.
Watanabe enters the tournament as a favorite with a fourth seed ranking. He will face Isa Kibira from Occidental Friday, April 27 at 11:30 am. He holds a singles record of 16-3 on the season.
Leach will take on Elmer Van Butselaar from Whittier at 10 am and Namba will face Lucas Tilly from Cal Lutheran at 11:30 am.
In doubles action, Watanabe and Leach rank as the fourth seed with a doubles record of 13-3. They will face Hunter Kettering and Elmer Van Butselaar from Whittier at 4:30 pm on Friday.
The Bruins and the other contenders from Div. III will share the weekend with athletes from Div. I, as the Pac-12 Championships will take place on the same courts.
