CAL LUTHERAN --- After setting history at the NCAA Division III West Championships hosted at the Ojai Tournament, the No. 32-ranked George Fox men's tennis team rattled off five straight singles points to beat Cal Lutheran, 5-4.
The Bruins had an uphill climb to start the match, as the Kingsmen grabbed all three points in doubles action. Each match was decided by two points or less with neither team having sole control throughout each set. At the No. 1 spot, Spencer Watanabe and Will Leach battled until the end in a hard fought 8-7 (8-6) loss to Yahn Gawrit and Lucas Tilly. Both Watanabe and Leach came into the day on short days rest after both competed over the weekend at the Ojai Tournament in singles and doubles.
George Fox dropped the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with an 8-6 score to Cal Lutheran.
With the deficit set at 3-0 heading into singles, the Bruins were on the attack. Freshman Payton Namba kick-started the Bruins' rally with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 spot. Leach followed suit with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot and Jonah Wafula tied the match up at the No. 6 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Watanabe, who was already battling a food illness going into the match, secured the Bruins' lead with a gutsy 6-3, 6-3 victory at the top spot. Keaten Baker clinched the comeback victory with a huge 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 three-set win at the No. 4 spot for the Bruins. Alex Namba was the final Bruin for the match in play but with the match clinched and needing to get on the road, the match was called midway through the third set.
