NEWBERG --- The George Fox men's tennis team got off to a strong start in its 2018-19 fall campaign, as the Bruins finished the first round of the Northwest Collegiate Fall Invitational with a combined 19 wins in singles.

The Northwest Collegiate Fall Invitational is comprised of two NCAA Division I teams in the University of Portland and the University of Idaho, as well as Northwest Conference adversary Pacific (Ore.) University.

Despite the cool Friday afternoon on the courts, the Bruins were red hot in both the first and second round of singles play. The Bruins posted a 19-4 singles record on the day with big wins from Luke Lemaitre, Keaten Baker and Alex Namba over Div. I opponents. When they were matched up against the Boxers of Pacific, the Bruins came out on top with a 15-1 record in head-to-head matches.

"It's nice to come out on top in so many matches, but the most encouraging and exciting takeaway was the tremendous heart and courage our guys showed in their matches," said head coach Neal Ninteman. "It was just a very gritty performance by the team across the board.  I could not be more proud of them for the way they battled on the courts today."

The Bruins will look to keep the momentum going in the second and third day as long as the weather stays away.
