A Winning Tradition
SPOKANE --- After suffering a gut-wrenching loss to No. 19 Whitman on Saturday, the No. 28-ranked George Fox men's tennis team bounced back with a 9-0 victory over Whitworth on St. Patrick's Day.
The luck of the Irish was not needed in this one, as the Bruins came out swinging in doubles play. Will Leach and Keaten Baker wasted no time letting their presence be felt with a demanding 8-1 victory at the No. 1 spot. Once the Bruins grabbed their first point of the match, it was off to the races. Justin Barton and Payton Namba won their match at the No. 3 spot, 8-3, while Alex Namba and Luke Lemaitre slammed the door with an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 spot.
With the 3-0 lead going into singles, the Bruins were hungry to keep the clean sheet going. A. Namba was the first Bruin to finish his match, taking down Kincaid Norris, 6-2, 6-1. Leach won his match at the No. 1 spot,6-2, 6-2, and Lemaitre made his match quick with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot. Rox Rogers found his groove with a 6-1, 6-2, showing at No. 4 singles and Pete Gibson followed suit with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles. P. Namba closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles to give the Bruins their third 9-0 victory in conference play.
What It Means:
With the 9-0 win, the Bruins improve to 4-4 on the season and 3-1 in the NWC.
What Comes Next:
The Bruins will take a break from conference play and head down to California for seven matches on March 22-27.
