Bruins Dominate Bearcats On Saturday

NEWBERG --- The No. 27-ranked George Fox men's tennis team hosted its final home game of the season on Saturday, beating the Willamette Bearcats, 9-0.

Recap:

The Bruins came into the match with their highest ranking in program history on the national level (27) and in the West Region (8). They flexed their muscles in doubles, taking all three points in dominant fashion.

Payton Namba and Thierry Van Os were the first to close out their match with an 8-0 victory at the No. 3 spot. Will Leach and Keaten Baker teamed up at the No. 1 spot and put on quite the show against Bearcats' Andrew Kabacy and Aaron Schechter in an 8-3 victory. Luke Lemaitre and Alex Namba matched Leach/Baker at the No. 2 spot with an 8-3 win to sweep doubles action.

With the 3-0 lead going into singles, the Bruins kept their foot on the gas to take all six points for the 9-0 showing. P. Namba was the first to finish his match with a 6-4, 6-2, win at the No. 4 spot, while Jonah Wafula grabbed the clinching point at the No. 5 spot, 6-0, 6-3. Pete Gibson won his first set, 6-0, and was up 5-0 before his opponent retired at No. 6 singles. Leach won his match at No. 2 singles and Lemaitre poured in a 6-1, 6-0, victory at the No. 1 spot. A. Namba put the finishing touches on the match at the No. 3 spot with a 6-4, 6-2, win to give the Bruins a perfect 9-0 victory.

What It Means:

With the win, the Bruins improve to 10-7 on the season and 6-1 in the Northwest Conference. The Bruins have now clinched second place in the conference standings with a 6-1 overall record, regardless if they fall in Sunday's match to Linfield.

The Bruins will play their final regular season match at Linfield on Sunday at 11 am.
