A Winning Tradition
MCMINNVILLE --- The No. 27-ranked George Fox men's tennis team capped off the regular season schedule with an 8-1 victory over Linfield College on Sunday.
The Bruins opened up the match with two quick wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots in doubles play. Luke Lemaitre and Alex Namba were the first to get on the board at No. 2 singles with an 8-3 victory. Thierry Van Os and Payton Namba won their match at the No. 3 spot, 8-5, to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. The biggest test came at the No. 1 spot, as Will Leach and Justin Barton battled hard against Linfield's Luis Rojas and Nathan Saragoza. Leach and Barton went back and forth with the top team from Linfield but fell in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (9-7).
With a 2-1 lead going in singles, made sure they wouldn't give up another point. Lemaitre won his match at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-2, while Van Os was solid at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win. A. Namba clinched the match for the Bruins at the No. 3 spot with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Pete Gibson added on with a win at the No. 6 spot and P. Namba followed suit with a win at the No. 4 spot. Leach was able to get revenge on Saragoza in singles, winning his match in a three-setter, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.
"It was another solid performance by our guys across the board," said head coach Neal Ninteman. "Special hats off to Justin today. We needed somebody to step into the ring at No. 1 doubles, which is always a tough spot. He stepped up beautifully and played like the champion he is."
What It Means:
The Bruins improve to 11-7 on the season and 7-1 in the NWC. With their 7-1 record in conference play, the Bruins will enter the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed.
What Comes Next:
The Bruins will wait and see who they will face in the NWC Tournament with one week left in the conference season. The NWC Tournament will take place on April 27 in the semifinal round.
