A Winning Tradition
NEWBERG --- George Fox swim hosted its second session of the Bruin Invite with 'A' and 'B' finals heats for the 12 morning session events, as well as the men's and women's 400 medley and 200 freestyle relays. The Bruins had 17 qualifiers from the morning session entered into the evening's events.
The Bruins' 'A' team of Olivia Gibson, Tessa Orozco, Gabrielle Wood, and Aspen Monkhouse won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.37 in a photo finish, edging Pacific Lutheran's 'A' group by two thousandths of a second at 1:40.39 to claim 40 points for the women's team in a huge victory for the program.
O. Gibson came in second in the A final of the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.99 and Orozco placed fifth at 1:02.12 as she saved a full second off her morning prelim mark. Gibson also came in second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.59 in the 'A' heat of the event.
Dean and Elijah Dapkus each made the 'A' final in the men's 100 fly and Dean finished fifth at 52.89. Dean also placed third in the 'A' heat of the 100 free with a time of 48.92 to grab 16 points for the Bruins.
Bartoo and Levi Gibson each did well in the 200 breaststroke as the pair combined for 26 points after Bartoo finished fifth in the 'A' heat and Gibson won the 'B' heat.
Monkhouse won the 100 free by a full second over her nearest competitor from PLU after swimming a 54.81 in the 'A' heat, and Orozco paired with Chloe Weber to grab 25 more points for the Bruins with fifth- and eighth-place finishes, respectively.
In the women's 500 free, the Bruins got a sixth-place finish and 13 points from Wood after a time of 5:31.84 – six seconds better than her prelim time – and another 11 from Maddy Angerame after the sophomore swam a 5:34.44 to place eighth.
In the last event of the day, the Bruins' 'A' team of Angerame, Wood, Gibson, and Monkhouse placed fifth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:14.08 to claim 26 points. The men's 'A' team of Dean, Bartoo, Dapkus, and Levi Gibson placed fourth to claim 30 points after swimming a 3:44.27 time as a group.
What It Means
The women's team sits in third with 280 points after day one of the Invite, while the men have collected 213 points and sit in fourth overall.
What Happens Next
The Bruins host day two of their Invite at the Chehalem Aquatic Center with prelims beginning at 10:00 am and finals slated for 4:00 pm.
