HILLSBORO, Ore. --- The George Fox women's soccer team kicked off the 2017 season against NCAA Division I opponent Portland State, losing the tough matchup just 2-0.
The Bruins proved to their opponents early on that they were ready to play. In just the fourth minute of the game, freshman forward Puka Ahina had a shot on goal that was saved by the opposing keeper.
The Vikings bounced back in the 11th minute with a goal to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.
The remainder of the half saw the Bruins playing tough defense, holding their opponents scoreless through the remainder of the opening half.
The Vikings led just 1-0 heading into the break.
The final 45 began with characteristic Bruin aggression. Senior standout Emma Logan had a shot on goal in the opening five minutes of play that was saved by the Vikings' keeper.
Three saves in ten minutes from keeper Kelsey Kammerzell kept the game close, but a late goal that slipped through in the 88th minute by Portland State set the final score at 2-0.
Weme and Ahina led the Bruin offense in this one, tallying a shot on goal each. Freshman midfielder Allie Day contributed two shots of her own to add to the effort. Bruin keeper Kammerzell tallied a career-high 12 saves to keep the score close against the tough opponent.
The Bruins begin play at home with a matchup against Beloit Friday, Sept. 1, at 6:00pm.
