A Winning Tradition

NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox women's soccer team finished in heroic fashion Saturday night, as the Bruins clinched the victory in the second overtime with a golden goal from Chloe Shumaker. The Bruins beat the Pipers, 2-1.
The Bruins struck early as freshman Shumaker beat her defender on the backline to find the back of the net in just the third minute of play.
George Fox stayed on the gas pedal through the first half, outshooting the Pipers 13-5 while the Bruins' defense held Hamline scoreless, maintaining their 1-0 lead through the break.
The Pipers struck back with a goal in the 61st minute to even the score at one.
The Bruins outshot Hamline 21-13 in regulation play, but were unable to score the go-ahead goal as the game went into extra time.
In the final minutes of overtime, freshman sensation Shumaker took a beautiful pass from Emma Logan past the Hamline defenders and managed to find the back of the net for the beautiful game-winning goal, stealing the win in a piece of Saturday night magic.
Shumaker netted both goals in this contest to lead the charge for the Bruins. Michala Denn chipped in four shots while Emma Laurion contributed three and Anderson Abby and Jayli Miyamoto tallied two apiece to round out the Bruin offense.
What It Means:
The Bruins open their season 2-1 with a win in overtime tonight.
The Bruins begin conference play against Pacific (Ore.) on the road Wednesday, September 13 at 7:00pm.
