A Winning Tradition
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich --- The George Fox women's soccer team earned its first win of 2019 with a strong result against the Knights of Calvin University. The Bruins found the back of the net in the 40th minute to take a 1-0 victory on the road.
The Bruins' defense saw the first meaningful action of the day with a corner kick in the eighth minute by the Knights. The Bruins' defense weathered the shot attempt and put a counter together, resulting in a shot on goal by Pilialoha Ahina in the 14th minute. The Calvin keeper was able to make the save, however, preserving the early 0-0 tie.
Both teams battled for possession between the boxes in the following minutes until the Bruins were able to push deep into Knights territory and set up a shot for Maggee Hogdgon with 31 minutes gone in the opening half.
Ten minutes later, the Bruins put another run together and went straight down the center to set up Claire Wright. The freshman forward carried a ball passed her defender to her right and then put a shot just inside the left post for the game-winner.
The Bruins traded keepers at the half and were able to largely control the tempo to earn their first shutout of the season. Brooke Jones made four saves in the second half to keep the Bruins' twine tidy, and the back line and midfield did the rest of the work to keep possession and preserve the win.
Wright found the back of the net for the Bruins with her first collegiate goal, and a game-winner at that. Jones made four saves to earn a shared shutout in goal and held off a furious second-half rally.
