A Winning Tradition
WALLA WALLA --- The George Fox women's soccer team (3-2-1, 1-2 NWC) earned its first win of its 2019 Northwest Conference slate on Saturday, Sept. 28, with a 3-1 statement victory over Whitman (1-6, 1-3 NWC).
The Blues took four early shots in the first minutes of the game to try and set a tone for the match, but Annalisa Klein stepped up and saved each one to keep a clean net. The Bruins got their first shot off in the 14th minute but the attempt by Megan Harrington was saved by the Blues keeper.
Whitman was able to put a tally on the board first after a great look in the 40th minute, finishing a shot from outside the box with a top-shelf strike on the far post.
The Bruins were able to rally after the halftime intermission with an equalizer, however, and used a series of quick shots to find the back of the net. A shot from Pilialoha Ahina in the 62nd minute was saved by the Blues' keeper, but the rebound got away and Madison Burch cleaned up the trash to tie the match at 1-1.
The 1-1 stalemate was broken with a goal by Harrington 20 minutes later. Harrington was able to capitalize on a mistake deep in Blues territory and slotted a shot home for the game-winner with just under 10 minutes to play.
An insurance penalty kick goal slotted home by Brittany Bravo in the 85th minute sealed the win and eliminated any risk of a comeback bid to clinch the win with a 3-1 final score.
The Bruins' keeper, Klein, made a career-high 10 saves in the win over the Blues, while Bravo, Harrington, and Burch took care of the offense for the Bruins.
