SALEM, Ore. --- The George Fox Bruins lost a heartbreaker on a drizzly Sunday afternoon, falling to the Willamette Bearcats 1-0 in overtime.
The pace of play from the starting whistle to the 35th was dictated by Willamette's crisp passes and controlled possessions. George Fox leaned on their backline as the Bearcats dominated the pitch, taking five shots before the Bruins ever got an offensive push of their own, but saves by Brooke Jones kept the score at 0-0. In the 39th and 41st minutes, George Fox finally made their way into Bearcat territory with Megan Harrington and Chloe Brock taking shots on goal, but both were saved by keeper Kristen Barclay.
The second half looked more promising for Fox as they held longer possession and gave themselves chances with good runs down the sidelines. Kara Ryker, Alisa Pairmore, and Amy Hatter all took shots on goal, but none found the back of the net. Regulation ended with a 0-0 tie, guaranteeing a third straight game that the Bruins would play in extra time.
In the overtime period, the toll of yesterday's long game and a thin bench loomed largely. Willamette took their opportunity to strike and, even though the Bruin backline kept the Bearcats in check, Shanna Kiel shot it past Jones' outstretched arm to the bottom left side of the goal to give WU the victory.
Pairmore led with two shots, including one on goal. Jones played well in the box again, saving five goals on the day. Harrington, Brock, Hatter, and Ryker proved to be a nuisance for the Bearcat defense, each posting a shot on goal.
