Bruins Win Home Opener Over Bearcats

NEWBERG --- The George Fox women's tennis team grabbed its first win of the 2019 season on Saturday, taking down the Willamette Bearcats in a nonconference match, 9-0.

Recap:

The Bruins made their presence known from the first point in the doubles matches. Sophia Lawrence and Taylor Morris secured the first point of the match with an 8-3 win at the No. 2 spot. Jillian Studer and Laney Search followed suit with an 8-6 victory over Robin Pashek and Sarah Dean at the No. 1 doubles spot. Danielle Brown and Alyssa Byde kept the Bruins perfect in doubles with an electrifying match at the No. 3 spot. Brown/Byde went back and forth with Ginsburg/Andres in the longest doubles match of the day with an 8-7 (8-6) victory.

Heading into singles, the Bruins showed no signs of slowing down. Taylor Morris led the way for the Bruins in singles, securing a clean sheet with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Alexis Gjurasic. Search picked up where she left off in doubles with a quick victory at the No 2 singles spot (6-2, 6-0).

Brown won her match at the No. 3 spot, 7-5, 6-1, and Megan Wilks was right behind her with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No 6 spot. Lawrence pulled off the Bruins' eighth point with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot.

The final match of the day came down between Byde and Sylvia Marr that resulted in three sets. Byde dropped the first set, 5-7, but quickly rallied in the second set with a 6-3 victory. In the deciding set, Byde pulled out a gutsy performance to keep the Bruins perfect on the day with a 1-0 (14-12) win.

What It Means:

The Bruins move to 1-3 on the season.

The Bruins will continue their homestand with a nonconference match against Pacific (Ore.) on Saturday, Mar. 2, at 11 am.
