Bruins Pull Off Nail-biter Over Boxers

A Winning Tradition

  • One Northwest Conference Tournament (2017)

NEWBERG --- The George Fox women's tennis team continued its success against conference opponents with a 5-4 victory over Pacific (Ore.) on Saturday.

This marks the second straight match the Bruins have beaten a conference opponent in a nonconference match. The Bruins were down early in doubles play, dropping the first two matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Laney Search and Jillian Studer secured the Bruins' lone point in doubles play with a back-and-forth 8-5 victory.

Trailing 2-1 going into singles play, the Bruins knew the challenge would be difficult. The Boxers grabbed another point at the No. 1 spot, but Search took down her opponent, 6-1, 6-2, to keep things interesting. Pacific found another point at the No. 5 spot to go up 4-2 – needing just one more point to secure the match. Sophia Lawrence got the ball rolling with a win at the No. 2 spot, while Danielle Brown pulled out a huge win at the No. 4 spot to even the match up at 4-4.

It all came down to the final spot in singles at No. 6, but Bruin Taylor Morris was up for the challenge. Morris went on to win 6-0, 6-2, to secure the Bruins second straight win on the season.
