NEWBERG --- George Fox played host for Lewis & Clark College on Saturday, Oct. 27, in a 3-0 sweeping win over the Pios. The 3-0 win avenges a previous 3-2 loss in Portland earlier this season.
The Bruins went blow for blow to start set one, but after trading side outs for the first two third of the set, a short 3-0 run gave the Bruins enough breathing room to take the opener. The quick burst gave the Bruins a 19-16 advantage that they stretched to the end for a 25-19 win in set one.
George Fox fell behind early in the second set, trailing 7-4 to the Pios, but another quick burst from the Bruins tied it at 8-8. A 17-7 run after the 8-8 tie carried the Bruins to a 25-15 win in set two, their best of the night.
The Bruins started from behind again in the third set as the Pios battled hard against the host team, but several long unanswered George Fox scoring runs helped carry the day. An early 5-0 run put the Bruins in front for good, 9-6, and another late run clinched the sweep. George Fox scored its final seven points without an answer from the Pios to take the match with a 25-16 final in set three.
Paige O'Rear and Laney Search led the Bruin offensive attack with 10 kills each – Search also tallied 16 assists, eight digs, and two block assists in another do-it-all effort for the home team. Danyle Dupray led all players with 20 digs, Sophia Lawrence was just behind with 19 herself.
