* COMING UP: Bruins to Host GFU Classic on Saturday at Willamette Mission SP

Sat., Oct. 12, 10:00 am - George Fox Classic, Willamette Mission State Park, Brooks, Ore.

 

NEWBERG, Ore. – In their only home cross country meet of the season, the George Fox University Bruins will host the George Fox Classic for both college and high school runners this Saturday, Oct. 12, at Willamette Mission State Park near Brooks, Ore., a change from the originally-scheduled venue at Fernhill Park in Portland.

 

The men’s 8K race will get the day’s events under way at 10:00 a.m., followed by the women’s 5K at 10:30 a.m.  Awards will be handed out at 11:00 a.m.  Junior varsity and varsity high school races - eight of them - will begin at 11:30 a.m., with awards to be presented around 4:30 p.m.

 

Fans who are planning to attend the day’s events should know that there is a $5.00 entrance fee per vehicle charged by the park, unless one has a state park pass.

 

The following weekend, the Bruins will compete in the Lewis & Clark College Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 19, at McIver State Park in Estacada, Ore., which was a late addition to the schedule.  The Bruins will then take a week off before the Northwest Conference Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Downriver Golf Course in Spokane, Wash.

* Tarbell, Sanders Receive Honorable Mention for NWC Runners of the Week

 

With a third-place finish by Kody Tarbell in the men’s division and a first-place finish by Erin Sanders in the women’s division of the Warner Pacific Open on Oct. 5, the two George Fox runners received honorable mention for the Northwest Conference Women’s and Men’s Cross Country Student-Athletes of the Week for Sept. 30-Oct. 6.

 

Tarbell, a juniorfrom Portland, Ore., came in third in the race at Blue Lake Regional Park in Fairview, Ore., and first for team scoring with a time of 16:23.20, half a second off his personal best for a 5K race.  The only two ahead of him were unattached runners Dustin Franta, the winner with a 15:52.00, and George Fox assistant cross country coach Tim Badley with a 15:53.60.  Tarbell led the Bruins to the Open title with 15 points to 50 for the host team, as the top seven scoring positions were all Bruins.  This was his second time to receive honorable mention for NWC honors this fall, the first time for Sept. 2-8. 

 

Sanders, a freshman from Newberg, Ore., picked up her first college win with a time of 19:36.80 in the 5K race, 40 seconds ahead of the runner-up Matice Dameron of Warner Pacific, who ran a 20:16.90.  Her efforts helped the Bruins to 20 points and a win over the host team, which scored 38 points.  This is her third time to receive honorable mention for the NWC weekly award, having also been cited for Sept. 2-8 and Sept. 9-15.

* COACH RANDY DALZELL:

 

Head coach Randy Dalzell (Columbia Christian ‘87) is now in his 2nd season with the Bruin men’s and women’s cross country teams after building nationally-prominent programs at Cascade, Northwest Nazarene, and Conordia-Portland in both cross country and track and field.  He was the NAIA Women’s Track and Field National Coach of the Year in 2011 while at Concordia, and the National Christian College Athletic Association Men's Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 2001 at Northwest Nazarene.  In all, he has been named conference, regional, or national Coach of the Year a total of 25 times, 18 times in seven years at Concordia and five times while at NNU, and has produced 39 Scholar-Athletes and 187 All-Americans.  Click here for the complete bio on Coach Dalzell.
