* COMING UP: Bruins to Forego L&C Invite, Concentrate on NWC Championships

Sat., Nov.  2, 11:00 am (W), 12:00 pm (M) - Northwest Conference Championships, Downriver Golf Course, Spokane, Wash.

NEWBERG, Ore. – After originally adding the Lewis & Clark College Cross Country Invitational to their schedule on Oct. 19, the George Fox University Bruins will now forego the L&C meet to concentrate on their next event - the Northwest Conference Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Downriver Golf Course in Spokane, Wash.

“After running in the Warner Pacific Open and our own George Fox Invitational each of the last two weeks, we determined that three straight weeks was probably a little much,” explained George Fox head coach Randy Dalzell.  “That would have given us only one weekend off before the conference meet, and we want to have a little more recovery time than that.  We’re in pretty good shape right now and don’t want to jeopardize that before conference, where I think we can do some really good things.”

The NWC women’s 6K race will begin at 11:00 a.m., while the men’s 8K race will start at 12:00 noon.  In last year’s events, the George Fox men placed fifth, with Joseph Pia coming in fifth to earn First Team All-NWC honors.  The Bruin women finished eighth in the 6K race.  Willamette University is the defending NWC men’s champion, and Lewis & Clark is the three-time defending women’s champion.

In their most recent outing, the Bruins came in fourth in the men’s 8K race and placed fifth in the women’s 5K race at the George Fox Invitational, which was held on Oct. 12 at the Willamette Mission State Park near Brooks, Ore.

* BRUIN BITS:

* Sanders BAC, NWC Women’s Top Athlete; Pia BAC Winner, HM for NWC Honors

Outstanding efforts in the George Fox Invitational on Oct. 12 at Willamette Mission State Park have earned cross country runners Erin Sanders and Joseph Pia the Bruin Athletic Club Women’s and Men’s Athlete of the Week honors respectively for Oct. 7-13.

In addition, Sanders was named the Northwest Conference Women’s Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Week, while Pia received honorable mention for the Men’s Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Week award.

Sanders, a freshman from Newberg, Ore., paced the Bruins in the women’s 5K race with a 19:09.0, finishing eighth overall out of 69 runners and eighth for team scoring.  It was her personal best at that distance, and helped the Bruins to a fifth-place finish.  This was her fourth time to receive honorable mention for the NWC weekly award, having also been cited for Sept. 2-8, Sept. 9-15, and Sept. 30-Oct. 6, and her first time to win BAC honors.

Pia, a senior from Newberg, Ore posted the top time for the Bruins in the men’s 8K race with a 26:06.1, finishing eighth overall out of 76 runners and seventh for team scoring.  He finished only 36.7 seconds of the pace set by winner Robert McLauchlan of the University of Oregon Running Club with his third-best time at that distance. His run helped the Bruins to a fourth-place finish.  This was his third time to receive BAC honors this fall, and his third time to receive honorable mention for the NWC weeky award.

The mission of George Fox University’s Bruin Athletic Club is to provide student-athletes with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the Bruin athletics program.  The club is a support organization for the Bruins’ 17 NCAA Division III varsity sports teams and the 400-plus students who participate in athletics each year.  The BAC Athlete of the Week Award for both men and women is presented throughout the sports seasons to recognize and honor outstanding athletic achievements and records by Bruin student-athletes.
